Absurdity. Closed-minded. This was just in the "Buff News", a little thing that goes out via email to students of CU Boulder regarding events, student groups, etc.
UNIVERSTIY OT AWARD CEO OF INTERNATIONAL LAW-BREAKING CORPORATION
The CEO of Newmont Mining, the world's second largest gold-miner, will be receiving the "International Bridge-Building Award" from Denver University. Newmont is alleged to be involved in police and military repression of Indigenous communities in the United States and Latin America where its cyanide, arsenic, and mercury-polluting mines are unwanted. Thursday August 30th on the South UMC terrace at 4:45. We bus to Denver and join the broad coalition event to stop the award.
These people know nothing of the work Newmont is doing. Please, everyone, shut up and listen to the facts. Please read Newmont's 2006 Social Responsibilty Report, which has been accredited by World Monitors, Inc.

Two points of interest in your passionate defense of Newmont's award:
1. World Monitors is a consulting company hired to support risk management and brand protection, not human rights and humane living conditions. If it can help companies implement the least cost brand protection programs, I am sure that it is probably well-compensated by those companies.
2. You have alluded primarily to the talking that has occurred at Newmont about more humane mining practices.
These points are important because Wayne Murdy had a long tenure at Newmont and during that time it seems clear that abuses persisted for most of his tenure if not beyond it. If this is the case, there is a good chance that Newmont interpreted the award as a sign that their brand protection is adequate and they need not do more than talk about sustainability. Many citizens and non-governmental groups have given detailed, persuasive and well-informed reasons for doubting the strength of Newmont's change of heart. They should not be dismissed out of hand.
